New to EU funding? Start here

You don't need to be an expert to get EU funding. This site explains everything in plain language, one step at a time. Follow the four steps below in order. Together they take about 30 minutes to read.

What is EU funding, in one paragraph?

The European Union sets aside money every year to help companies, researchers and organisations work on things Europe cares about: new technology, jobs, a healthier planet, digital skills and a stronger economy. The money is shared out through programmes (big funding schemes such as Horizon Europe) that publish calls (invitations to apply). If your project matches a call and you meet the rules, you can apply. Independent experts then pick the best proposals.

Why does the EU give money to startups and small businesses?

Small and medium-sized companies make up most businesses in Europe and create a large share of jobs and new ideas. But new technology is risky and slow to pay off, so private investors often hold back. EU funding fills that gap by taking on part of the risk, so good ideas can reach the market. That way they help Europe meet goals such as climate neutrality, digital leadership and economic security.

What should I read, and in what order?

  1. How EU funding works: the types of funding (grants, equity, loans, prizes, cascade funding), the main programmes, who can apply and what it costs you.
  2. Find the right programme: a simple guide based on your company's stage.
  3. How to apply step by step: from creating an account to signing a grant agreement, with timelines and common mistakes.
  4. Read the latest newsletter: see real, open calls explained simply, then subscribe to get them every Monday.

What are the five things every beginner should know?

Where are EU calls officially published?

All calls are published on the official EU Funding & Tenders Portal, run by the European Commission. It has a lot in it and can feel overwhelming at first, which is why our weekly newsletter picks out the calls that matter for startups and SMEs and explains them simply.
